MDNT MRKT CONT

Literary criticism, Detroit writing, essays, theory, culture, and experimental work

MDNT MRKT CONT is an independent literary publication focused on essays, cultural criticism, literary analysis, Detroit writing, experimental prose, poetry, dramatic writing, and theory-driven creative work.

This is a Substack for readers who want more than quick takes and disposable opinion. It is built for people interested in literature, Black cultural production, queer thought, performance, philosophy, identity, memory, labor, and the architecture of language.

At its center, MDNT MRKT CONT explores how writing can function as record, witness, critique, archive, and art object all at once.

If you are looking for a publication grounded in Detroit culture, literary form, longform writing, and serious creative thinking, you are in the right place. Miraculously, the internet still allows pockets of intelligence to survive.

What is MDNT MRKT CONT?

MDNT MRKT CONT is a cross-genre literary and cultural platform publishing work across:

  • Longform essays

  • Literary criticism

  • Cultural commentary

  • Detroit-centered writing

  • Poetry and poetic prose

  • Experimental nonfiction

  • Plays and dramatic excerpts

  • Podcast companion texts and show notes

  • Theory-based reflections on race, gender, class, labor, and media

  • Serialized fiction and ongoing literary projects

The publication is interested in both style and structure. It takes language seriously. It values rhythm, argument, atmosphere, and form. Posts may move between the scholarly and the intimate, the essayistic and the theatrical, the reflective and the analytic.

This is not content for the sake of output. It is a living body of work.

What makes MDNT MRKT CONT different?

A lot of publications want attention.

MDNT MRKT CONT wants resonance.

The work here is not built to skim past your eyes and vanish. It is built to hold shape. To create continuity between literature and theory, between Detroit and the broader cultural landscape, between personal experience and formal analysis.

This publication treats writing as both craft and method. It assumes readers are capable of complexity. It values the sentence as much as the thesis. It believes criticism can still have style, and that creative work can still think.

About the writer

Monet Marcel by Delray is a writer, critic, and multidisciplinary literary artist whose work spans fiction, poetry, essays, dramatic writing, criticism, and audio-based publishing.

They are the founder of MDNT MRKT CONT, an independent platform for longform writing, experimental criticism, literary publishing, and cross-genre cultural work. Their writing engages questions of race, memory, labor, identity, performance, place, and language, with a strong grounding in Detroit as both environment and method.

Their academic background includes study in English and Women’s Studies, with continuing interests in literary theory, Black studies, philosophy, performance, cultural criticism, and the relationship between STEM logics and artistic form.

Through MDNT MRKT CONT, they continue to build an archive of writing that is intellectually rigorous, formally ambitious, and rooted in the belief that language still has work to do.
